Pendulum power by Clare Gogerty

My interest in witchcraft was triggered as a child by my father. He called himself a ‘neopagan’ and used a pendulum to search for energy lines in the garden, and sculpted figures of the Green Man. It deepened when I discovered stone circles and prehistoric burial chambers and when I got my own crystal pendulum. I joined a druid order and learned the importance of the wheel of the year and honouring the different seasons with ritual and meditation. These days my practice is nature-based, measured by the solstices and equinoxes and boosted with herbs and crystals. I live on a smallholding in Herefordshire, a rural county intersected by mystical energy paths and dotted with sacred sites. It feels like the right place to be.

Pendulum power is a good way into modern witchcraft. You can make your own from a metal ring and piece of string or buy one – they aren’t expensive. In this short article, I’ll give you a few pointers on the best way to use one and to harness your witchy power.

Magic is all around us. Even if you live in the heart of the city, the moon still rises, the wind still blows and the trees in the park still stand silent and wise. The natural world has ways of making itself known, it tugs at your sleeve and urges you to remember it. There is a saying that if you don’t believe in magic, magic will never happen. This I agree with. If you aren’t open to the pull of the moon, the wisdom of ancient trees and forgotten paths, the power that lies within you, then the magical world will remain closed to you.

One of the simplest and most to access your hidden power is with a pendulum. Every witch should have one, it is a key to a world of wonder, unlocking magic, revealing energy paths, answering troubling questions and helping you understand the world around you.

The method by which pendulums reveal their magic is called ‘dowsing’. A pendulum is used by dowsers to trace leylines or to seek answers to troubling questions. The movement of the pendulum, which can either be a rotation or a swing, supplies a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to any query. Here’s how to do it.

Before and after use, purify your pendulum by washing it in saltwater or passing it through burning sage or incense.

Find a quiet place and be still. Hold the pendulum between your thumb and index finger and let it dangle. It helps if you sit by a table and hold the pendulum above it.
Think carefully about what question you will ask; keep it simple, it has to be one that can be answered with a yes, no or maybe.
Work out which way the pendulum swings for ‘yes’ and which for ‘no’ by asking it a straightforward question firsteg are my eyes blue? Or Do I live in this house? Do the same for ‘maybe’. The pendulum may also rotate in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction.
Consider who will answer your question: it could be a goddess, a spirit guide, the universe or your own intuition.
Ask your question and allow the pendulum to swing freely until it settles in one strong direction and provides your answer. This may not happen immediately but be patient, it will!
