An Interview With Melissa Bradley-Vatcher!

Carry a world of adorable amigurumi in your pocket with the Kawaii Crochet Card Deck, a high-quality deck featuring 50 fun patterns from Melissa Bradley-Vatcher's bestselling Kawaii Crochet series!

This one-of-a-kind card deck has finally hit the shelves, and in celebration we sat down with Melissa to discuss all things kawaii crochet; read on to learn where she finds inspiration, her top tip for beginners and more.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a crochet designer who has a love for all things handmade. My background is in interior design and floral design but the best job I have is being a Mom. My kids have been the reason and my inspiration behind this wonderful, crochet journey. If I’m not crocheting I am usually cooking/baking, snuggling with my cavapoos Kit and Clyde, or spending time in the mountains.

Tell us about Kawaii Crochet Card Deck?

It’s so cute! It features a total of 50 crochet patterns mostly from my Kawaii Crochet book series, with fifteen new patterns not found in any of the first three books.

I love how perfect it is for crocheting on-the-go. It features a full-color photo of the finished make on the front of the card, pattern written in US crochet terms on the back, and an accompanying booklet covering all the essential techniques.

What is your favourite amigurumi project in the deck, and why?

It’s hard picking a favorite, but I really enjoyed making the Shrimp. It was the one request my 17 year old daughter had while I was making the deck. She has since requested clothes for it, as well as a hat and scarf. She has it displayed on her bookshelf and just loves it.

What was your route into crochet?

I watched my grandmother crochet when I was little and thought it looked interesting and fun. Then as a teenager I bought a “Learn to Crochet” book from my local craft store and taught myself. I have been “hooked” ever since!

What does the Kawaii Crochet Card Deck offer crocheters that they can’t get anywhere else?

Really cute and relatively quick projects you can take with you wherever you go. Sounds simple, but getting there was the greatest challenge. Trying to fit an amigurumi pattern on a single card was more difficult than I anticipated, but the result are patterns that are simple and concise while still being really sweet and fun to make.

What advice would you give to any beginners starting their crochet journey?

Crocheting feels awkward to everyone at first so don’t give up, keep practicing, and crochet as many different patterns as you can.

In one word, how would you describe the Kawaii Crochet Card Deck?

Fun!

From charming critters to cute fruit, the Kawaii Crochet Card Deck is packed with adorable patterns that will bring a smile to your face whether you're keen to brush up on your crochet skills or enjoy a range of projects perfect to take on-the-go; order today from the link here!
