Interview With Cilla Webb of Knitting Peppa Pig!
With Knitting Peppa Pig, you can bring the colourful characters from Peppa's world to life! We sat down with talented author Cilla Webb to learn all about her biggest inspirations and how she designed over 20 adorable characters for this officially licensed book.
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi! My name is Cilla Webb and I love designing whimsical knitted toys. I started making toys for my boys when they were little and haven’t stopped since. When I’m not knitting, I work as a teacher of the deaf.
Tell us a bit about Knitting Peppa Pig?
Knitting Peppa Pig was quite an endeavour! The turnaround for the project was really tight and I ended up taking a whole suitcase of yarn to our family holiday to make sure I stayed on track. Luckily, my relatives were very understanding and didn’t mind me sitting on the beach with my project bag by my side!
What is your favourite project/pattern featured?
I think George’s dinosaur is definitely my favourite. He took a few tries to get right but I just love how he turned out in the end.
What was your route into craft?
My mum taught me to knit from a very young age. I stopped knitting in my late teens but then picked it back up again when I was pregnant with my eldest son.
Where do you look for inspiration: other designers, Pinterest?
I love the cute cartoony style of Kawaii and Chibi drawings and I get lots of inspiration from other crafters on Ravelry and other social media channels.
What is the most challenging thing about being a designer/knitter?
For me, the most challenging thing is accepting that not everything has to be perfect! Some of my most loved toys have crooked smiles or slightly wonky ears.
What makes up for the challenges?
The feedback I get from knitters who have used my patterns makes up for all the hours spent working and editing patterns. I often get emailed lovely stories about who they knit for and why. It’s really heartwarming.
What do you think the “Next Big Thing” in your craft will be?
I would love to publish more books with my own characters. I have published books in the past, but life took over and I wasn’t able to fit it into my busy schedule as a mum and a teacher. Hopefully, now that my boys are that little bit older, this is something I can look into doing again.
How big a part, if any, does sustainability play in your work?
I like to work with yarns that are durable and environmentally friendly. Buying and working with yarns that are produced in the UK helps to reduce my carbon footprint slightly.
Who (dead or alive) would you invite to the perfect knitting retreat?
I would love to invite Jean Greenhowe as her books were one of the first toy patterns I used when I was knitting for my boys. I think her story is quite inspirational and after all these years, you can still find her books and knitted toys everywhere!
What advice would you give to your beginner self?
Be kind to yourself… knitting takes time and is supposed to be fun. If a project is stressing you out, give it a time-out and come back to it later.
In one word, how would you describe this book?
Addictive! It’s impossible to just knit one character. They need friends!
